GREEK MATHEMATICIANS

Most Famous Greek Mathematicians lived around 7th century BC to the 4th century AD

FAMOUS GREEK MATHEMATICIANS:

Pythagoras (puh- THA-guh-rus) of Samos, Aristotle (AIR-iss-tah-tuhl), Anaxagoras (an-ak-SAG-er-uhs),

Euclid (YOU-klid) of Alexandria, Archimedes (ahr-kuh-MEE-deez) of Syracuse, Thales (THAY-lees) of Miletus,

Aristarchus (arr-iss-TAR-kuss) of Samos

Q1: Who was the first famous Greek Mathematician?

Q2: Which one is considered the most accomplished?

Q3: What accomplishments did they succeed?

Q4:

Pythagoras was one of the first Greek mathematical thinkers. The Pythagorean Theorem is shown below.

Aristotle was really interested in science. He used Socrates' logical methods to figure out how the real world worked; therefore Aristotle is really the father of today's scientific method.

Anaxagoras used his logic to figure out what caused eclipses.

Euclid is known as the "Father of Geometry" so obviously, he had something to do with the invention of geometry.

Archimedes used the method of exhaustion(The method of exhaustion is a method of finding the area of a shape by inscribing inside it a sequence of polygons whose areas converge to the area of the containing shape. Basically making a lot of smaller shapes inside the big shape to find the area) to calculate the area under the arc of a parabola with the summation of an infinite series, and gave a remarkably accurate approximation of pi(3.141592653...). He also defined an ingenious system for expressing very large numbers.

Thales discovered that a circle is bisected by its diameter; the angles at the bases of any isosceles triangle are equal; if two straight lines cut one another; the opposite angles are equal; and if two triangles have two angles and a side in common, the triangles are identical. Thales' theorem is shown below.

Aristarchus presented the first known heliocentric model of the solar system placing the Sun, not the Earth, at the center of the known universe.

                                  Pythagorean Theorem

The sum of the areas of the two squares on the legs (a and b) equals the area of the square on the hypotenuse (c).

                                  Thales' Theorem

if AC is a diameter, then the angle at B is a right angle.

A1: Thales is known as the first true mathematician.

A2: All of the famous Greek mathematicians are considered very accomplished.

A3: They all had different accomplishments. Look above for some of their accomplishments.

Wow, Wesley, no wonder you didn't want me to do Greek Mathemeticians! Anyway, I am going to do currency so have fun!!! GREAT TOPIC!!

Wesley, Wesley. You always have to be so specific!

Dear W.,
You've selected a very challenging topic. The Greek mathematicians you are investigating are a very rich collection of thinkers. We should speak as your project develops to make sure the topic is not too broad to be covered within our time span. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Your Teacher
