The Abacus

                                                                            by Saptadip Sadhukha

          Hey! Do you know what an abacus is? Have you ever wondered what an abacus was used for? You may be asking where did the word abacus come from? I'll tell you about this fascinating tool.

               An abacus is a counting device, also, it is a mechanical device for making calculations consisting of a frame with ascended rods along which beads or balls which is moved.  An abacus is a tool used mostly in parts of Asia and Europe. An abacus is used for performing arithmetic processes. Abaci(plural for abacus) comes from many countries of the world including Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, China, India, Japan, Korea, and Russia. The abacus first originated in ancient Mesopotamia. In Greek, abacus meant "calculating-table." The abacus has been around for thousands of years. The idea of the abacus spread to other countries. Nobody had a calculator back then. It was just an abacus. They used the tool for math processes. That is why there are so many types of abaci. Today, abaci cost about $10.00 to $17.00. The abacus we see today was invented by the Chinese. The Chinese had invented the abacus in century 3000 BC.

       Then, people invented the calculator which replaced the abacus. Boo Hoo! I was very sad to say that the abacus was replaced. The abacus wasn't very popular because people had invented the calculator. To know what a calculator is, go to Dc's Page Of Awesome.

(: Fun Facts :)

*Did you know?...

       That nobody really invented our abacus! According to research, people just said that the Chinese invented our abacus. His name remains anonymous. I guess we humans will never know the person who invented an "Old Calculator." They said a Chinese by the name of Lee Kai Chen invented a new style of the abacus with 4 decks. To this very day, we will not know that genius' name. Lee Kai Chen improved our abacus.

 * Did you know?...

      The abacus is very ancient in the history of mathematics. It came from ancient Mesopotamia all the way to other countries. According to others, some say that our history with mathematics starts with the abacus. The abacus was very old back then. If you are using a tool, it must mean you are using a calculating-table that brings us back from B.C.

                            *Did you know?...

         You can do addition and subtraction on an abacus.

* Did you know?...

The abacus wasn't the first counting device. Researchers say that the first counting device was fingers. Fingers was used by the cavemen.

 This man must be proud because he discovered counting.

* Did you know?...

People stopped using the abacus because someone had invented the calculator.

This tool was the downfall of the abacus. People still use abaci today, but they use a calculator more.

                 People use this instead of an abacus.(Today)

I am very pleased to see the first stages of your research, S. In particular, I like the research questions you introduced at the beginning of the page. Research questions help to focus the efforts of the researcher. Keep up the good work.
